DSE M2 Exam Format and Time Management
The DSE M2 paper lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and carries 100 marks: Section A has 8 to 12 short questions (50 marks) and Section B has 3 to 5 long questions (50 marks). All questions are compulsory. That is 1.5 minutes per mark, so a 7-mark question deserves about 10 minutes.
A Time Plan That Leaves Room to Check
150 minutes for 100 marks is 1.5 minutes per mark. Spending a little less on Section A buys checking time at the end:
- Section A: about 65 minutes (roughly 1.3 minutes per mark). These are routine: induction, a binomial coefficient, first principles, a limit, a quick integration, a matrix or vector calculation.
- Section B: about 70 minutes. Three to five long questions that build through parts (a), (b), (c).
- Checking: about 15 minutes. Run the ten-second checks:
+ C, limits, cross products, wording.
These numbers are a starting plan, not a rule. Adjust them after timing yourself on a full paper.
What to Do When a Long Question Stalls
- Use the given result. If part (a) says "show that …" and you cannot, you may still use the stated result in part (b). Never abandon a whole question because one part failed.
- Read "hence" as a hint. It tells you the next part is meant to follow from the last line you proved.
- Draw it. For vectors and for areas or volumes, a sketch often shows the step you are missing.
- Move on at the time limit. Marks at the start of the next question are easier than the last mark of this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
2 hours 30 minutes, for a single paper of 100 marks divided equally between Section A and Section B.
Section A has 8 to 12 short questions and Section B has 3 to 5 long questions. All of them have to be answered; there is no choice of questions.
Most candidates do Section A first because the questions are shorter and more predictable, which secures marks early. If vectors or calculus long questions are your strength, there is no rule against starting there.
