DSE M1 (Calculus and Statistics): Notes, Formulas and Interactive Graphs for Every Topic
DSE M1 is Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) of the HKDSE Mathematics Extended Part. It has 20 learning units in three areas: Foundation Knowledge, Calculus and Statistics (probability, the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions, and confidence intervals). This page links to notes for every unit, each with formulas, worked examples and an interactive graph.
What Is in DSE M1?
The curriculum allocates about 125 hours to Module 1, of which 118 are for the learning units below:
- Foundation Knowledge (2 units, 11 hours): binomial expansion, and exponential and logarithmic functions.
- Calculus (7 units, 51 hours): limits and derivatives, differentiation, the second derivative, applications of differentiation, indefinite and definite integration, and the trapezoidal rule.
- Statistics (11 units, 56 hours): conditional probability and Bayes' theorem, discrete random variables, the binomial and Poisson distributions, the normal distribution, sampling distributions and confidence intervals.
The examination is a single paper of 2 hours 30 minutes. Section A has 8 to 12 short questions worth 50 marks and Section B has 3 to 5 long questions worth 50 marks. All questions are to be answered. See the full M1 syllabus and exam format and time management.
Instant Help for M1 Questions, With the Graph Drawn for You
SketchMath is built on GeoGebra. Type an M1 question, or upload a photo of it, and you get a step-by-step solution together with the diagram: the shaded region under a normal curve, the bars of a binomial or Poisson distribution, a tangent, the area under a curve, or the strips of the trapezoidal rule.
- You do not construct the graph yourself. It is generated from the question, then you can drag the sliders and points.
- Choose "DSE M1" in the curriculum menu so the answer uses M1 methods and notation and stays inside the syllabus (no trigonometric calculus, no integration by parts).
- Generate practice questions for any of the 20 units and check your working step by step.
